Main Characters: Who's who?

     Patroclus is the son of King Menoitius. When he was a young boy he was exiled from his home land for killing a boy. He was sent to Phthia to live in a shelter under the rule of King Peleus. Patroclus meets Achilles, the son of King Peleus and Thetis, a sea-nymph and shape-changer who controls the ocean. Patroclus is one of the main characters in this book. He finds love with Achilles and goes out to fight for him in the Trojan war but is killed by Hector. Achilles is devistated over the loss and takes revenge by killing Hector. 

Description: Skinny, lanky, clumsy.

Patroclus

Achilles

     Achilles, son of Peleus and the sea-nymph Thetis. He was said to be the greatest warrior of his generation and of those before him. He was the most beautiful, being born from a goddess. As a young boy, Achilles succeeded in everything he attempted. He was never bad at anything and never lost. After taking Patroclus as his therapon, or companion, Achilles falls in love with him. They spend every second together, against Thetis' wish. Both Achilles and Patroclus are mentored by Chiron, a centaur and are taugh valuable skills that they will use in the battle. Achilles proves his swiftness and agility in the Trojan war, only to be killed for seeking revenge on Hector for killing Patroclus. Achilles left behind a son, Pyrrhus, who wins the trojan war but is killed soon after. Achilles and Patroclus are burried next to each other where their spirits can mingle in the underworld. 

Description: Muscualar, fit, handsome, godly, swift.

Peleus

     Peleus was the king of Phthia. Father of Achilles by sea-nymph Thetis. Peleus shelters exiled boys in his kingdom because he himself was an exile. He is in an everlasting battle with Thetis on how Achilles should be raised.

Description: Old, pious.

Agamemnon

     Agamemnon ruled Mycenae, the largest kingdom in Greece and was the over-general in the Greek expedition of Troy. Agamemnon and Achilles often quarreled because he refused to acknowledge the Agamemnon's power and his right to command Achilles. During the Trojan war, Agamemnon took Achilles' war prize, Briseis, wrongfully. Achilles refused to continue to fight in the war until he returned her and apologized. Although Agamemnon was stubborn, he reluctatly returned the girl right before the Trojans invaded and Achilles helped fight again. Agamemnon returns home after the war and he was murdered by his wife, Clytemnestra.

Description: Strong, powerful, conceited.

MORTALS

Hector

     Know for his strength, nobility, and love of family, Hector was the son of King Priam and the crown prince of Troy. Hector and Achilles were said to be a pretty even match in fighting. The prophecy said that once Hector was killed, by Achilles, Achilles would die soon after. In the Trojan war, Hector killed Patroclus in battle and then Achilles took the anger of his dead partner out on Hector by killing him. 

Description: Strong, handsome, powerful.

Helen

     Helen, daughter of the god Zeus and queen Leda, was the most beautiful woman in the world. Many men sought to marry her, but it was decided she should get to chose on her own. When she chose, every suitor swore to protect her whenever needed. Fast forward about nine years and Helen is abducted by the Trojans. All who swore to protect her, mostly Greeks, and all who wanted to help rescue Helen went to war. Even though Patroclus had sworn to protect Helen, he was not going to go fight until he found out Achilles would fight. They both fought together against the Trojans to try and rescue Helen. 

Description: Beautiful, fair, kind.

GODS AND IMMORTALS

Thetis

     Thetis, mother of Achilles, was a sea-nymph and shape-changer. Thetis' son was prophesied to be stronger than his father, so Zeus made sure she married a mortal in order to limit the power of her son. When Peleus seduces Thetis and takes away her purity, she is forced to stay married to him for one year. During the year she has a son, Achilles. Throughout the book, Thetis and Peleus argue about the rasing and training of Achilles. Thetis wants to take Achilles back to her cave deep in the sea, but Peleus says that is no way for a prince to be raised. Thetis despises Achilles and Patroclus' relationship.

Description: Pale, Beautiful, powerful, scary.

Chiron

     Chiron is said to be the only good centaur because the rest are animal-like. He has been the teacher of many great fighters, including Achilles. Chiron also created surgery and medicine. He teaches Achilles and Patroclus both while they are on the mountain with him.

Description: Half man, half horse, kind, caring, wise.

Zeus

     Zeus is the father of many famous heroes including Heracles and Perseus. He is also the king of the gods. When the Trojan war is going on, Thetis asked Zeus to intentionally make the Greeks lose so that Agamemnon would apologize to Achilles and return Briseis. Zeus agrees and makes the Trojans victorious until Agamemnon apologies and returns the girl and then Achilles helps the Greeks fight again and Achilles kills Hector.

Description: Powerful, all-knowing.

Apollo

     Apollo is the champion of the Trojans and the god of light and music. Apollo was responsible for sending the plague down upon the Greeks when Agamemnon would not return the priest's daughter.
